Contributor Series: How I am politically like my parents. . .or not
by Electric Elliot
Everyone once in a while, the Melonites get together a think of a new writing series that keeps the creative juices flowing, sparks discussion and builds community. With the political abound, Melonite Glynnis Kirchmeier made a brilliant pitch:
Here’s the idea: “How I am politically like my parents…or not”. Basically this would be a reflection upon how your values/politics differ from or are the same as your parents’. This can come at it from many angles – did they talk to you about this stuff as you grew up, or did they leave you alone? Did you fight about your opinions? Was there discussion, or did they expect you to believe as they did? Did they raise you to believe civic engagement is important, or did you come to that conclusion separately? How do your siblings differ from you, and is that because of personality or home life?
Starting Monday, many of the Melonites will be answering just that. We’ll post a new one every day either in The Vine or Ripe sections of the mainpage. Feel free to chime in, and share your stories with us as well. We can’t promise to post them, but we’ll probably pull in some. If you’d like to share, email themelon@themelononline.com.
Sorry Mom and Dad, but this is about to get personal.
