for the GOLDEN CONTRIBUTOR (Contributor of the year)…

I nominate Joseph la Sac for going where most people feel too uncomfortable to go, for being arrested twice just to honestly film an event, for offering the protection and voice of media coverage to those who are willing to put themselves at risk for what they believe in rather than just talking about it, for staying out all day and night for days at a time to make sure that dissent is heard. Joe did more than just read and make interesting social commentary for the melon. He risked his well-being, his reputation, camera equipment, he poured in time and energy, money and ambition, to bring Tacoma the stories no one else wanted to share. He may not be the most frequent contributor, but I think he’s contributed the most real journalism.

@commenter, Joe’s certainly a qualified contender but you’re wrong if you don’t think the Melon has other contributors who put forth “real journalism.” Why, just Elliot and I alone have interviewed over 150 politicians and community leaders in the last year alone, including: US Senator Patty Murray, Congressman Norm Dicks, State Representative Dennis Flannigan, Pierce County Councilmen Calvin Goings and Tim Ferrell, Initiative Activist Tim Eyman, Tacoma City Councilman Mike Lonergan, TEA President Derrick Hartman, State Poet Lauriete Samuel Green, Volcano Cartoonist RR Anderson, Rev Bill Bishcell, KLAY Radio Host Frank Blair, Tacoma School Board President Jim Dugan, Skip Drepps, Tacoma School Board member Kim Golding, Thomas Hine, Bill Kupinse, Stonewall President Anita Latch, Nathe Lawver, Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist, Tacoma Parks Commissioner Ryan Mello, State Senator Ed Murray, Centro LAtino Director Julio Quan, UPS President Ron Thomas, Tacoma School Board Member Connie Rickman, Dick Sonntag, State Auditor Brian Sonntag, Tom Stenger, Tacoma City Council Member Marilyn Strickland…..just to name a few.

You can endorse a contributor without minimizing the efforts of our fellow Melonites.

I guess I should have said, the most interesting journalism? The people who aren’t normally featured in newspapers and on tv? School board members and local politicians and artists are great, but everyone loves and talks about them. Joe looks to the people who are overlooked or even looked down upon by everyone else, whose names you don’t see in mainstream news. Talking to the local council members, candidates, or school board members are interesting, but something that regular news outlets and high school news papers often cover.
